Detailed Itinerary

Mengo Palace (Kabaka’s Palace)
Begin your journey at the historic Mengo Palace, the royal residence of the Kabaka of Buganda. Built in 1885, the palace offers a window into the life and times of Kabaka Mwanga II, the Buganda king whose actions played a pivotal role in the story of the Uganda Martyrs. Here, you’ll learn about Mwanga’s growing opposition to the presence of missionaries and his orders to persecute converts who chose to denounce traditional beliefs and embrace Christianity.

The guided tour includes a visit to the underground dungeons, shedding light on the political tensions of the time. This stop provides a powerful introduction to the broader narrative of the martyrs’ sacrifice during the late 19th century.

Kabaka’s Lake
A short distance from Mengo Palace lies the serene Kabaka’s Lake, the largest man-made lake in Uganda. This ambitious project was initiated by Mwanga II in 1886 as part of his vision for connecting Kampala to Lake Victoria by waterway. Though the project was never completed, the lake remains a testament to Mwanga’s ingenuity and ambition.

Visitors can take a leisurely walk around the lake while hearing stories of how Mwanga’s reign intertwined with the growth of Christianity in Buganda. This stop offers a moment of reflection on how the kingdom’s political and cultural dynamics contributed to the rise of the martyrs.

St. Balikuddembe Market (Owino Market)
Next, immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of St. Balikuddembe Market, Kampala’s largest market. Originally named after Charles Lwanga, one of the most prominent Uganda Martyrs, this bustling hub is a cultural and economic center for locals. As you explore the market, you’ll experience the lively spirit of modern-day Kampala, where traditions and contemporary life coexist.

Take time to interact with the friendly vendors, discover unique crafts, and enjoy the sensory overload of colorful stalls filled with fresh produce, fabrics, and local delicacies.

Lunch Break
Indulge in a traditional Ugandan meal at a nearby restaurant. Enjoy local favorites such as matoke, luwombo, or grilled tilapia, paired with freshly made fruit juices. This lunch break allows you to savor the flavors of Uganda while reflecting on the cultural richness you’ve experienced so far.

Namugongo Martyrs Shrine
After lunch we will visit The Namugongo Martyrs Shrine. The highlight of the trail is the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, one of the most revered Christian pilgrimage sites in Africa. This UNESCO World Heritage Site honors the 22 Catholic martyrs who were burned alive on June 3, 1886, for refusing to denounce their faith. The shrine, which was consecrated by Pope Paul VI in 1969, attracts millions of pilgrims every year, particularly on Martyrs Day.

Here, you’ll explore the awe-inspiring basilica built in the shape of a traditional Buganda hut. The surrounding gardens and monuments offer spaces for prayer and reflection, while exhibits provide detailed insights into the lives and sacrifices of the martyrs. The shrine’s connection to global Christianity is underscored by the martyrs’ canonization by Pope Paul VI in 1964.
