Day Excursion: Birding Buganda Trail

Itinerary
Mengo Palace Begin your day at the historic Mengo Palace, the heart of the Buganda Kingdom. Wander through the lush grounds and gardens, where you can spot a variety of bird species such as the yellow-fronted canary, African grey hornbill, and violet-backed starling. As you explore the palace, learn about its cultural significance and the fascinating history of the Buganda monarchy.
Kabaka’s Lake Next, head to Kabaka’s Lake, a peaceful and historically important water body. The surrounding vegetation is home to various water birds like the African jacana, pied kingfisher, and different species of herons and egrets. Take a leisurely walk around the lake, with plenty of opportunities for birdwatching and photography in the serene environment.
Lunch at a Local Restaurant After exploring Kabaka’s Lake, enjoy a traditional Ugandan lunch at a local restaurant. Savor popular dishes such as Matoke, Luwombo, Posho, Rolex ( famous Ugandan-style rolled omelet), freshly grilled fish, and more, offering a true taste of the region’s flavors and culinary culture.
Kasubi Tombs In the afternoon, make your way to the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the burial grounds of the Buganda kings. The area’s rich vegetation attracts a wide range of bird species, including the white-throated bee-eater, grey-capped warbler, and African wood owl. Evening Birding and Relaxation As the afternoon winds down, enjoy some final birdwatching in the area surrounding the Kasubi Tombs or a nearby nature reserve. we will enjoy local delicious snacks and fruits. The late afternoon light provides the perfect setting for spotting evening bird species as you unwind and take in the peaceful atmosphere.
Return to Kampala After a full day of exploration, you’ll head back to Kampala, reflecting on the rich cultural and natural beauty experienced throughout the day.
