Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey – This is a rare and endangered primate species that is endemic to Zanzibar. This beautiful creature is endemic to the Zanzibar Archipelago. It has distinctive red and black fur, and can be found in the Jozani Forest Reserve. They are very eye-catching with their long silky red and balck coats, with white tuffs on their tails. They are endangered with numbers ranging between only 2000-5000 individuals.
Aders’ Duiker – This is another rare and endangered species that is endemic to Zanzibar. This dainty cute little antelope weighs about 11 kgs and is about 50 cms in height, that is found only in the island’s forests. The Aders’ Duiker is a nocturnal species and is very rare to spot. Its hihly endangered with numbers recorded at only 1000 individuals in 2023.
Green Turtle – Zanzibar is one of the few places in the world where you can see green turtles nesting on the beaches. The island’s waters are also home to hawksbill turtles, loggerhead turtles, and olive ridley turtles.
Spinner Dolphins – These playful and acrobatic dolphins are a common sight in the waters around Zanzibar. They are known for their spectacular leaps and spins. Compared to Kenya, they are easily seen around here.
